What it means to be a United Methodist

Membership Vows

When someone joins a United Methodist church, they make a commitment to faithfully participate in the life of the church through five simple but meaningful practices:

  • Prayers
  • Presence

  • Gifts

  • Service

  • Witness

These aren’t just words—they’re ways we live out our faith together as a church family.

Grace

At the heart of what we believe: At the center of United Methodist belief is grace—the idea that everything God gives us comes from love, not something we earn. “You are saved by God’s grace because of your faith… it is God’s gift.” — Ephesians 2:8–9

John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement, taught that God’s grace is always at work in our lives—before we know it, in the moment we turn to God, and as we continue to grow.

Prevenient Grace

Grace that goes before

God is already at work in our lives before we even realize it—drawing us toward Him, planting the desire for faith, and surrounding us with His love.

Justifying Grace

Grace that makes us new

This is the moment we turn to God and receive forgiveness and new life through Jesus Christ. It’s where our relationship with God begins.

Sanctifying Grace

Grace that shapes us over time

God continues working in us—helping us grow, change, and become more like Christ in how we live and love every day.

Grace isn’t just a one-time moment—it’s a lifelong journey of being loved, forgiven, and continually transformed.

The General Rules

A simple guide for how we live.
From the earliest days of Methodism, followers of Jesus have been guided by three simple practices:

Do No Harm

Avoid what hurts others, ourselves, or our relationship with God.

Do Good

Look for every opportunity to love, serve, and care for others.

Stay In Love God

Grow in faith through worship, prayer, Scripture, and the life of the church.

These simple rules help shape a life of faith—one that reflects God’s love in everyday actions.

Connection & Shared Mission

We’re connected—for a reason

In the United Methodist Church, we don’t do faith alone. We are part of a connection of churches working together to share the love of Christ.

A man in a tan blazer and red sweater holds a lit candle during a solemn, dimly lit ceremony. Other people stand nearby, also holding candles.

What This Means

We are connected through:

  • A shared faith

  • A shared mission

  • A shared commitment to serve

Making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world

This mission connects us—not just within our church, but with United Methodists around the world.

Together, we can do more—serving, loving, and making an impact far beyond what we could do alone.
