Respite Ministry

The Respite Care Ministry at First United Methodist Church of Dothan is designed to meet the social and emotional needs of older adults and their caregivers. It provides activities and socialization opportunities outside the home in a safe and caring setting for older adults with mild to moderate memory loss. This time provides their caregivers with emotional support through a caregiver support group, information regarding available resources, and personal time away during the day in which to rest and address their own needs. *No medical care is provided.

Three groups of people will be dramatically affected by this lifeline called Respite Ministry: caregivers, participants, and volunteers. The caregivers will receive a much needed break from a day that never ends. Those with memory loss will be showered with love and most of all reminded that God NEVER forgets them. The volunteers leave with hearts full of love and purpose. All will leave our time together at FUMC Respite Care with an assurance of having been in the presence of God. This ministry provides respite (an interval of rest or relief) for the caregiver. It supports the efforts of the family to keep the loved one in the home environment, which will contribute to the quality of life of the participant as well as the family. This ministry offers a monthly support group with an experienced staff member. It also provides information regarding available community resources, nursing home options, Alzheimer information, etc.

This ministry provides a safe, loving environment for the well-being of each participant. A variety of activities includes, but is not limited to, social, creative, intellectual, spiritual, and recreational programming. All activities are designed to provide mental stimulation and social participation. Examples of activities include group singing, gardening, crafts, community services, reminiscing, exercise, adapted floor games, inter-generational programs, art therapy, pet therapy, and socialization activities. Celebrating 10 Years of respite care ministry

Enrollment

Participants must be independent in the following: Participants must have the ability to ambulate independently with or without assistive devices without potential danger to self or others. They must have the ability to attend to their own bathroom needs. They must possess the ability to feed themselves. We require a completed medical examination from the participants physician and a list of current medications. Caregivers are invited to call and schedule a tour of the Respite Care Center prior to enrollment. Hours of Operation

We operate Monday – Thursday from 10 am – 2 pm in Rooms 152 and 155 of First United Methodist Church, Dothan. This is at the corner of Main St. and Park Ave – 1380 West Main Street, Dothan, Alabama. The program is closed on holidays (New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, etc.) and follows the Dothan City school system for weather-related closings.
