Older Adult Ministry

Our Older Adult Ministry is a program that responds to the spiritual needs and interests of members who are 50 years of age or older.  We offer opportunities for worship, learning, fellowship, faith sharing and service that help older adults relate to God, continue to grow in their faith and be actively involved in the life of the church.

Alzheimer's Support
Alzheimer's Support Group meets on the first Monday of each month at the First United Methodist Church. The meetings are held at 7:00 p.m. in room 2132. Will and Raba Coggins are the facilitators of the Dothan group. For a caregiver packet or for  information about the support group or additional programs and services, call the Alzheimer’s Resource Center at 702-2273.

Audio Books
The purpose of this ministry is to provide a resource for people who cannot effectively read standard print because of visual impairment, other physical disability or who just enjoy the relaxation and diversion that audio books provide.  If you need books brought to your home please let Terri know and arrangements will be made.  A list of books can be emailed to you - terri@fumcdothan.org

Bridge Clubs
A time of fun and fellowship.
1st and 3rd Wednesdays 1:30 p.m.

Bunko Club
Bunko

Meets on the 4th Wednesdays of each month in room 2124 from 2:30-4:30.  You do not have to have prior knowledge or experience with this fun dice game. Anyone can learn to play in 5 minutes.

First Response

FIRST RESPONSE, a ministry of the United Methodist Men.  This ministry is targeted for those that need help with minor repairs or maintenance in your home, i.e. Leaky plumbing fixtures, install small kitchen appliances, replace electrical switches, rearrange furniture, and replace outdoor floodlights bulbs.  If you or someone you know could use a helping hand, call or email Terri terri@fumcdothan.org or David Hendrix david@fumcdothan.org

Grief Share
Grief Share is a support group for people grieving the death of someone close.  It’s a place where you can be around people who understand how you feel and the pain of your loss.  At Grief Share, you’ll learn valuable information that will help you through this difficult time in your life. This group meets the second Thursday of every month at 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. in the parlor.  For more information contact Bill Frank at 334.792.1100 x 2113 @ Wiregrass Hospice or Terri  Francis at 334.793.3555.

Lunch Club
Eat!


Lunch Club meets at a local restaurant once a month on the 2nd Thursday at 11:30 am.  The group chooses a different restaurant each month.  The group is mixed ages, singles and couples.  Watch the newsletter each month to find out where we are meeting or you may contact Terri at terri@fumcdothan.org or at 334.793.3555 x 221.

PACE® (People with Arthritis Can Exercise)

PACE® is an exercise program designed specifically for people with arthritis that uses gentle activities to help increase joint flexibility and range of motion and to help maintain muscle strength. It also helps increase overall stamina. Instructors who have undergone a special Arthritis Foundation instructor-training workshop conduct classes. The exercises you learn in the PACE® program, however, should not replace therapeutic exercises prescribed for you by a therapist. Marsha Waller a certified instructor in the PACE® program leads classes in the gym.   Classes  held Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.  Cost is $10.00 per month.   To register call the CLC at 334.712.9223.

Traveling with Terri
Fun and adventure await when you travel with personable traveling companions. You will appreciate the care and attention to detail that make each trip enjoyable for all travelers. We have taken trips to Branson, Atlanta, Montgomery, Nashville, Destin, Colquitt, GA, Panama City, Callaway Gardens, New England, Savannah, Lake Junaluska, NC, a cruise to Mexico, Washington, DC/Williamsburg and soon an Alaskan Tour and Cruise.

Young At HeartClayton
A time of fellowship, devotional, program and lunch.  Programs include musical entertainment, informational programs, programs on health issue, legal issues and interesting travel sites.  This is a time when trips, upcoming events and new programs are announced.  Young At Heart is considered the hub of our Older Adult Ministry.   Young At Heart is a ministry of First United Methodist Church, but we welcome anyone to join us in this fellowship.  Meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 11:00 AM in the Fellowship Hall.  Cost of the lunch is $4.50.  Make reservations by calling the church office at 793-3555.  Reservations should be made by noon Monday before the Tuesday meeting. Meals on Wheels
Meals On Wheels is a project sponsored by First United Methodist Church.  It is designed to bring hot noon meals to shut-ins five days per week.  If you need additional information contact Pat Hawkey, Coordinator at 334.671.2998.

Transportation
Wheelchairs are available so don’t let the fact that you may be unable to walk long distances be a hindrance for you in attending church.  We have 3 wheelchairs that are available for just that purpose.  They are located in the following areas: the heritage hall information center, the lobby of the fellowship hall at the CLC entrance, and in the closet in the narthex.  If you would like for us to meet you in the parking to assist you just give us a call 334.793.3555 before you leave home and we will meet you with a wheelchair.

Transportation is provided each Sunday for residents of The Terrace at Grove Park by FUMC volunteers. Pick up is from the lobby at 9:15 a.m. and return is following the 11:00 worship service.  If you would like to use this service please sign up in the lobby at The Terrace. 

Parking Lot Shuttle available each Sunday morning from the Park and Main parking lot. Except during inclement weather.

Worship Assistance

  • Hearing devices for church services held in the  sanctuary are available.  Those needing these should ask a usher.

  • Large print hymnals are located in the narthex of the sanctuary.

  • Large print Upper Rooms are available.  If you are unable to pick one up you may request to have it mailed to you by calling the church office at 793-3555.

  • If you are unable to attend worship and would like to receive communion in your home this ministry is available.  Please call Rev. Allie Freeman, 793-3555 for more information.

  • Worship services televised Sunday morning on WDHN-TV at 8:00.

  • Worship service broadcast Sunday mornings at 8:30 on 93.7-FM, WRJM

  • Hear PERCEPTIONS weekday mornings at 7:30 on FM 102.5 and 106.7.
